1977 – Willie Stargell hits a two-run homer – the 400th of his career – as the Pittsburgh Pirates defeat the Cardinals, 6-1, in St. Louis.

1980 – Ron Skiles of Charleroi defeats Russ Snyder in a sudden-death playoff to win the Ohio Valley Window Company golf tournament at Highland Springs Golf Course.

1981 – Trinity High School, winner of only one game the last two seasons, hires Gerald Berty, a Charleroi native and former Brentwood assistant, as it new boys basketball coach.

1990 – Dave Stewart of the Oakland A’s pitches the first of two no-hitters on this day, beating the Toronto Blue Jays 5-0 at the SkyDome. Fernando Valenzuela of the Los Angeles Dodgers duplicated Stewart’s feat by throwing a 6-0 no-hitter against the St. Louis Cardinals. It is the first time in major league history that two no-hitters were pitched in both leagues on the same day.

2007 – Barry Bonds hits his 750th career home run in San Francisco’s 4-3, 10-inning loss to Arizona.

2008 – Burgettstown’s Dan Conley is named the Observer-Reporter Male Athlete of the Year. Jenna Phillips of Washington is selected as the Female Athlete of the Year.
