1952 – Led by Don Miklansevich’s 15 points, the Centerville Wildcats defeat Irwin 37-30 in the WPIAL Class B basketball quarterfinals in McKeesport.
1954 – George Smoggie scores 25 points and Bethlehem Joint holds off a late Peters Township rally for a 73-69 victory in the WPIAL Class B basketball quarterfinals at Donora.
1958 – Jim Chacko scores 20 points and Charleroi defeats Springdale 55-49 in the WPIAL Class A quarterfinals at the Pitt Field House.
1959 – Jim Chacko scores 25 points as Charleroi defeats Midland 69-32 in the WPIAL Class A semifinals before 4,140 at the Pitt Field House. The game includes four technical fouls and a third-quarter brawl.
1970 – Kent Scott scores 32 points and Pitt rallies from a nine-point deficit to defeat host West Virginia, 92-87, in the final basketball game at Mountaineer Fieldhouse.
1970 – California State wins the NAIA District 18 basketball championship, defeating Edimboro 72-71 in the championship game played at Geneva College. Cal wins by scoring three points in the final two seconds. With Cal trailing 71-69, Allen Dade is fouled and makes the first of two free throws. He misses the second attempt but the Vulcans’ Jake Taylor grabs the rebound and tosses in the game-winning basket as time expires.
1976 – Tom Wise scores a career-high 31 points to lead Washington to an 87-77 victory over Bishop Boyle in the WPIAL Class AA boys basketball quarterfinals at Chariers Valley.
1979 – Bentworth becomes the first Washington County school in six years to advance to the WPIAL basketball finals. The Bearcats rout Union 78-46 in the Class A semifinals. Kevin Tony leads Bentworth with a game-high 31 points.
1979 – California State’s Bill DePaoli decisions Central (Okla.) State’s Jeff Robinett 13-2 to win the 118-pound weight class at the NAIA Wrestling Championships at the Wheeling Civic Center.
1980 – Mark Hozak scores 23 points and Paul Epps has 18 as Waynesburg College upsets top-seeded Point Park 77-72 in the NAIA District 18 semifinals.
1986 – Theron Hogue scores 21 points, Rick Puskar adds 20 on 10-of-11 shooting, and Waynesburg defeats St. Vincent 89-84 in the NAIA District 18 basketball semifinals at College Gym.
2001 – Waynesburg High School freshman Coleman Scott upsets Section 5 champion Jeff Breese of McGuffey, 6-4, in the 112-pound final to highlight the WPIAL/Southwest Region Class AAA Wrestling Championships.
