1963 – Three area wrestlers – Trinity’s Jerry Lattimore (127 pounds), Waynesburg’s Bob Shriver (133) and McGuffey’s Jerry Seamon (154) – win PIAA championships at Penn State. Lattimore’s title is his second. He won the 95-pound title in 1961.
1965 – Ray Campanelli, who guided Avella to a WPIAL Class B football coachmapionship, is hired as head coach at Canon-McMillan.
1973 – Bob Anderson scores 12 of his game-high 16 points in the first half as Washington High School defeats Sharpsville 72-45 in a PIAA Class B playoff game at the Pitt Field House.
1974 – Canon-McMillan’s Angelo Marino wins the 98-pound title at the PIAA Class A Wrestling Championships in State College, and Burgettstown’s Jim Walters wins the 119-pound Class B title in Harrisburg. Marino decisions Carlynton’s Gary Uram 6-1 in overtime, and Walters pins Mercer’s Eric Filer in 1:24.
1979 – Bentworth wins a defensive struggle, defeating Kanty Prep 44-41 in the PIAA Class A Western Region quarterfinals at Westminster College. Kevin Tony leads the Bearcats with 21 points.
1982 – Diane Gillespie scores 15 points, including the 1,000th of her career, and Immaculate Conception defeats Chesnut Ridge 39-30 in the first round of the PIAA Class A girls basketball playoffs at Greensburg-Salem.
1984 – Harold Hamlin makes a 12-foot jumper with one second remaining as Waynesburg upsets 10th-seeded St. Mary’s of Texas, 61-59, in the second round of the NAIA basketball tournament at Kemper Arena in Kansas City. Hamlin scores the Yellow Jackets’ final 10 points and finishes with 19.
1985 – Washington blows past overmatched North Star 83-47 in the first round of the PIAA Class AA boys playoffs. It’s the 52nd consecutive win for Washington, tying the WPIAL record.?1985 – Canon-McMillan’s Rob Benjamin and Ron Rothka win PIAA Class AAA wrestling championships. Benjamin dominates the heavyweight division, defeating Dallastown’s George McCormack 8-0 in the finals. In winning the gold medal, Benjamin outscores his opponents 59-6. Rothka (98) is the only underclassman to win a Class AAA title. He edges Liberty’s Dan McIntyre 3-2 in the finals.
1990 – The Washington girls basketball team overcomes a six-minute scoring drought and defeats District 10 runner-up Seneca 63-47 in the PIAA Class AA basketball playoffs at Quaker Valley. Kim Wise scores a career-high 26 points and also grabs 20 rebounds for the Prexies. Elizabeth Proudfit follows with 20 points.
