1959 – Despite a 28-point performance by West Virginia’s Jerry West, California edges the Mountaineers, 71-70, to win the NCAA basketball championship.

1961 – Terry Holder scores 18 points and Rich Hallam has 17 as Fort Cherry defeats Cochranton 71-44 at Farrell High School to advance to the PIAA Class B basketball championship game.

1966 – Dick St. Clair resigns as basketball coach at Peters Township High School after guiding the Indians to three consecutive Section 15 titles.

1977 – Jack Wiley resigns as head football coach at Peters Township High School. Wiley guided the Indians to the WPIAL Class AA playoffs in 1976.

1980 – President Jimmy Carter announces that United States athletes will not participate in the Summer Olympic Games in Moscow.

1981 – Four area wrestlers, including two from Chartiers-Houston, win championships at the PIAA tournament in Hershey. The Bucs’ Phil Mary (98 pounds) and Brian Bell (145) win Class AAA titles. Washington’s Tom Wilt (126) and Waynesburg’s Doug Haines (155) are state champions in Class AA.

1984 – Mark Wise scores 20 points and Washington wins its 24th consecutive game, 73-61 over Bishop Guilfoyle, in the PIAA Class AA playoffs at St. Francis College.

1989 – Junior Scott scores 18 points, including two free throws with nine seconds left, as Monessen edges Sharpsville 66-64 in the PIAA Class A basketball quarterfinals at Butler High School.

1990 – Ryan Cook scores a game-high 24 points and grabs eight rebounds to lead Ringgold to a 66-57 victory over McKeesport in the PIAA Class AAAA Western Region quarterfinals at Robert Morris’ Sewall Center.

1990 – Marcus Chatman scores 16 points, Matt Jennings follows with 15 and Washington defeats Keystone 74-65 in the PIAA Class AA Western Region quarterfinals at Butler High School. Jeremy McCool, Keystone’a all-time leading scorer, is held scoreless by the Prexies.

1990 – Marvin Lewis, a former Fort Cherry High School athlete, is hired by Pitt as its outside linebackers coach.

1992 – Natalie Kubala’s two free throws in the closing seconds give Washington the lead and the Prexies hold on to beat Seton-La Salle 62-60 in the PIAA Class AA West Region girls basketball semifinals at Ringgold High School.

2010 – Da’Sean Butler scores 19 of his 28 points in the first half and West Virginia defeats Missouri 68-59 to advance to the NCAA basketball tournament’s Sweet 16.

2012 – Lamar Patterson and Tray Woodall combine to score 14 points in overtime as Pitt defeats Butler 68-62 to advance to the finals of the College Basketball Invitational tournament.
