1939 – Lou Gehrig of the New York Yankees does not play against the Detroit Tigers at Briggs Stadium, ending his streak of 2,130 consecutive games played.

1952 – Mt. Lebanon wins its 11th straight Washington Invitational track & field championship. Canonsburg’s Bob Hayes (440-yard dash) and Pete Nikas (880) are the only event winners from Washington County.

1968 – James R. Harris is named head basketball coach at Washington & Jefferson College. Harris was head coach at Rochester High School.

1973 – The San Francisco Giants score seven runs with two outs in the ninth inning to beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-7.

1978 – The Pittsburgh Steelers select Eastern Michigan defensive back Ron Johnson in the first round of the NFL Draft.
