High school softball

Taylor Dunn and Emma Starr combined on a four-hit shutout, Madison Argo drove in three runs and Trinity clinched the outright Class 5A Section 4 championship with a 7-0 victory over visiting Bethel Park on Thursday.

The win improves Trinity’s record to 9-0 in the section and 13-1 overall. The Hillers have won 12 in a row and have not lost since March.

Against Bethel Park (4-6, 6-10), the Hillers wasted no time, scoring three runs in the first inning, one on a single by Hanna Suhoski and two on an ensuing single by Argo.

The Hillers scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, and added two more in the sixth.

Dunn struck out four and did not walk a batter over six innings.

Ryleigh Hoy and Amber Morgan each scored a pair of runs for Trinity.

High school baseball

Andrew Kocan hit a two-run homer in the first inning and Sam Meredith had a tiebreaking RBI single in the fourth as Canon-McMillan clinched at least a share of the Class 6A Section 2 championship with a 3-2 win over Central Catholic on Thursday.

The win leaves Canon-McMillan at 10-3 in the section and 12-4 overall with two league games remaining.

Kocan’s home run gave the Big Macs a 2-1 lead after one inning. Central Catholic tied it at 2-2 in the top of the fourth. In the bottom of the inning, Cameron Russell drew a two-out walk and moved up on a single by Connor Helbling. Russell then scored when Meredith singled to right field, giving C-M a 3-2 lead.

Big Macs starting pitcher Ben Urso pitched 4 1/3 innings, allowing two runs (one earned). Tyson Mead pitched the final 2 2/3 innings for the win, allowing only one hit.
