This year, National EMS Week is May 21 st – May 27 th . During this time, we take the opportunity to

recognize the work of our EMS agencies and the lifesaving services they provide. However, the job also

comes with many risks. Specifically, traffic-related incidents are among the most dangerous for first

responders. On average, more than 40 first responders die while responding to traffic emergencies each

year. This number does not include the numerous severe injuries sustained by those working rescues on

or near roadways. Distracted driving is a growing issue, and factors such as adverse weather conditions

or low visibility at night can create additional hazards. The reasons may vary, but the dangers first

responders face while providing care at the scene of motor vehicle accidents are clear.

The Washington County EMS Council recognizes these dangers and is committed to protecting local first
responders. A recent traffic safety initiative has been at the forefront of discussions. Last month, the
Council purchased 185 helmets to distribute across 28 EMS agencies and fire departments within the
county. The goal is to provide the much-needed safety benefit of head protection while responding to
traffic emergencies. Additionally, they are designed to accommodate various light systems that not only
illuminate the area for responders, but also provide added visibility for drivers near the scene. This
purchase is instrumental in the safety of EMS and fire personnel in the field.
