1950 – Joe Paterno, quarterback at Brown University the last two years, is named assistant football coach at Penn State.

1953 – Fred Sarracino pitches a five-hitter as Burgettstown Union defeats Washington 7-3 in the first round of the WPIAL baseball playoffs.

1956 – Robert (Red) Worrell of Centerville sets the record in winning the shot put at the PIAA Track & Field Championships at Penn State. Worrell’s winning throw covers 55-5 1/2. He also places second in the discus (142-6 1/2). Hickory’s Sam White is second int he mile run.

1959 – Pittsburgh’s Harvey Haddix pitches one of the best games in major league history but takes the loss in a 1-0 victory by the Milwaukee Braves at County Stadium. Haddix retires the first 36 batters he faces. Milwaukee finally scores in the 13th on an error, intentional walk and a home run by Joe Adcock that was later changed to a double because he passed Hank Aaron on the bases. Milwaukee’s Lew Burdette pitches a 13-inning shutout, allowing 12 singles but does not walk a batter.

1972 – Chartiers-Houston High School’s Chester Reck wins the PIAA Class B shot put gold medal with a throw of 54-0 1/4.

1987 – Rae Lynn Gostic’s single in the bottom of the seventh inning drives in winning pitcher Tricia Fabian as Chartiers-Houston defeats Serra Catholic 1-0 in the WPIAL Class AA softball playoffs at Ringgold High School.

1987 – Boston’s Larry Bird steals an inbounds pass from Detroit’s Isiah Thomas and feeds over his shoulder to a cutting Dennis Johnson for the winning basket as the Celtics pulls out an improbable 108-107 win over Detroit in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals.

1992 – Mario Lemieux’s second goal of the game, with 13 seconds to play, rallies the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 5-4 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks in Game 1 of the Stanley Cup Finals at the Civic Arena. The Penguins overcome a 4-1 second-period deficit.

2004 – Beth-Center, playing its first game in two weeks, gets a three-hit shutout from Chelsea Stotka and beats Neshannock, 7-0, in the WPIAL Class A softball quarterfinals.

2004 – Daryle Ward hit for the cycle and tied his career best with six RBIs in Pittsburgh’s 11-8 win over St. Louis.

2005 – Waynesburg College names Rick Shepas head football coach. Shepas had been head coach at Washington High School in Massillon, Ohio, for seven years, compiling a 53-28 record.

2012 – Fort Cherry’s Jessie Merckle becomes the first track and field state champion in Fort Cherry girls history when she wins the Class AA javelin with a throw of 154-1. Teammate Jenna Lucas finishes sixth in the event. Washington’s Dustin Fuller races to the gold medal in the Class AA boys 300-meter hurdles with a school-record time of 37.78.
