Greer Tunnel reopens along Montour Trail

By Katherine Mansfield staff Writer mansfield@observer-Reporter.Com 2 min read

Under last Friday’s blue skies and warm sunshine, the Montour Trail Council reopened the Greer Tunnel to the public.

“We’re open again so people can come out here, travel, enjoy this beautiful view of Chartiers Creek,” said MTC president Ned Williams. “We’re made whole.”

Earlier this year, Greer Tunnel, which was completed in 1922 as part of the Montour Railroad and sits at Montour Trail mile marker 28 1/2, closed for emergency repairs, after ceiling debris began falling and posing a safety risk to trail users.

Emergency repairs began in March and the tunnel reopened ahead of Memorial Day weekend. Scheduled repairs as part of the three-phase renovation project had already been slated for summertime, and the tunnel again closed in July.

The renovations cost about a quarter of a million dollars, Williams said, including the $110,000 for emergency repairs this spring. In 2022, the Redevelopment Authority of the County of Washington awarded the Montour council $241,000 for the project. The MTC contributed $250,000, and generous donors have provided the bulk of the rest of the funding.

The project is still being funded through donations, which MTC will graciously accept.

Within the first 90 minutes of its opening, a half dozen walkers and cyclists navigated their way through the tunnel, trail volunteers said, admiring the western facade and the shiny galvanized steel support lining, provided by Camera Corporation.
