In cross country

The Trinity boys team competed Wednesday in the Big South Championships at Mingo Park. The Hillers finished as the runners-up with three runners finishing in the top 10 and receiving all-conference recognition.

Finishing fourth overall Devin Junko, Ben Papson crosed the finish line in seventh place and Andy Ciampa was close behind in ninth.

Girls soccer

Bella Moyer kicked in a pair of goals and Bentworth blanked Monessen 4-0 in Class A Section 2 on Wednesday.

The win keeps Bentworth in the playoff hunt with a 4-5-1 record in section and 6-6-1 mark overall.

The Bearcats led 3-0 at halftime. Meredith Allender and Abigail Brandu each had a goal and goalkeeper Cassidy Sicchitano had the shutout that dropped Monessen to 1-7-1 in section and 3-8-1 overall.

  • South Allegheny used a goal on a penalty kick by Rylee Stetz early in the second half to upset visiting Chartiers-Houston 1-0 in Class A Section 2.

The loss drops C-H to 7-3 in section and 11-3 overall. South Allegheny is 5-4, 10-5.

  • Camryn Klein had a goal and an assist to lead Peters Township to a 4-1 victory over Norwin in Class 4A Section 2. Julia Spergel, Jordan Klein, and Marina Hajnosz also scored for the Indians and Ella Neupaver contributed an assist.

Boys soccer

Peters Township picked up a key road win Tuesday night at Norwin, 2-0, in Class 4A Section 2.

The win moves PT (8-3, 9-3) into a tie for second place with the Knights. PT and Norwin have split the season series.

The Indians received goals from Nathan Froelich and Adam Smiga.

In men’s soccer

McKinley Joseph scored a pair of goals and Jimmy Gogol tallied the eventual game-winner to lift Washington & Jefferson to a 4-3 win over Waynesburg in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference match Wednesday at Alexandre Stadium.

The win improves the Presidents to 2-1-2 in the PAC and 3-4-3 overall. The Yellow Jackets are 3-2 in the league and 6-4 overall.

In college sports

The NCAA Division I Council on Wednesday approved a smaller window during which football and basketball players can enter their names into the transfer portal and still be eligible to play at a new school the following season.

The decision shaves the timeframe from 60 days to 45. The council also voted to eliminate caps on how many players Division I football teams can sign in a year, though overall scholarship limits will remain in place.

In baseball

The New York Mets were awarded a 1-0 win over the Marlins in the game suspended by rain on Sept. 28, with Miami’s two-run rally in the ninth voided because the inning was not completed.

The game would have been resumed Monday had it impacted the postseason but was not because the Marlins were assured of the second NL wild card and Arizona the third.
