Monessen edges Carmichaels, 14-13

Monessen scored a pair of second-quarter touchdowns and stopped a two-point conversion by Carmichaels with less than four minutes remaining to edge the Mikes 14-13 in a Class A Tri-County South Conference game Friday night.

Monessen (1-3, 2-5) grabbed a 14-0 lead in the second quarter as Rodney Johnson had a one-yard scoring plunge and Lorenzo Gardner caught a 21-yard TD pass from Dennis Hawkins. The scores came less than two minutes apart.

Carmichaels closed to within 14-7 early in the third quarter when the Mikes blocked a Monessen punt and Gage Kundly returned it 20 yards for a touchdown.

The Mikes’ Luke Donaldson scored on a five-yard run with 3:15 remaining to make it 14-13, but the Mikes’ potential game-winning two-point conversion run was stopped short of the end zone.

Belle Vernon 53, Greensburg Salem 7: Braden Laux threw three touchdown passes in leading Belle Vernon to a victory over Greensburg Salem in Class 3A Interstate Conference play at James Weir Stadium.

The Leopards (2-0, 5-1) built a 47-0 lead in the second quarter before the Golden Lions (0-2, 1-6) got on the scoreboard.

Laux’s scoring strikes were to Quinton Martin (13 yards), Adam LaCarte (16 yards) and Anthony Crews (34 yards). Martin also scored on a 7-yard run for Belle Vernon’s first points.

Kole Doppelheuer scored on touchdown runs of 5 and 28 yards.

Preston Rathaway kicked a 33-yard field goal and the Leopards had a team safety in the first quarter.

Chase Mertz found the end zone on a 2-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Dom Rosensteel pulled in a 35-yard touchdown reception from Peyton Chismar for Greensburg Salem’s lone touchdown.

Jefferson-Morgan 50, Mapletown 21: Jefferson-Morgan fell behind 14-0 in the game’s first eight minutes, but the Rockets responded by reeling off the next 50 points en route to a win over Mapletown in a Class A Tri-County South Conference game.

Houston Guesman passed for two touchdowns and ran for another, Collin Biseglia had a pair of second-half TD runs and Deakyn Dehoet caught a scoring pass and returned the second-half kickoff for a touchdown.

The Rockets improved to 3-1 in the conference and 4-3 overall. J-M has won three straight.

A.J. Vanata, back after being sidelined for several games with an injury, helped Mapletown (0-4, 2-5) forge the 14-0 lead. He threw TD passes for 21 yards to Roger Gradek and 64 yards to Evan Griffin.

J-M finally got going when Guesman threw a 44-yard TD pass to Jaymison Robinson. John Woodward’s 12-yard scoring run made it 14-14.

The Rockets took the lead on Guesman’s 46-yard pass to Dehoet, and Guesman added a 24-yard scoring scamper.

Dehoet returned the second-half kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown. Guesman rushed for 122 yards on 11 carries.

Vanata completed eight of 16 passes for 134 yards.

South Fayette 24, Plum 13: Nico Lamonde passed for two touchdowns and ran for another as South Fayette stopped a four-game slide with a win over Plum in a non-conference game.

Lamonde threw TD passes of nine yards to Michael Gimigliano and four yards to Nate Deanes. He capped the Lions’ scoring with a three-yard TD run in the fourth quarter that put South Fayette up 24-7.

Lamonde completed 22 of 29 passes for 276 yards. The Lions were held to only 32 rushing yards.

Tyler Nicholson booted a 41-yard field goal for South Fayette (3-4).

Carlynton 32, Chartiers-Houston 24: Chartiers-Houston had a 16-point lead after the first quarter, but Carlynton battled back for a victory in Class A Black Hills Conference play at Chartiers-Houston.

The Buccaneers (0-4, 0-7) opened the scoring on Aaron Walsh’s 35-yard touchdown run and held a 9-0 lead after a snap went over the head of the Carlynton punter and into end zone.

Zeke Watkins’ 2-yard run extended the home team’s advantage to 16-0.

Ryan Lewis pulled in a 9-yard touchdown reception from Devonte Dean, and Dean ran in a touchdown from 11 yards out to cut the deficit to 16-13 at halftime.

Jacob Stiffler blocked a punt and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown and a 20-16 lead for the visitors in the third quarter after Mateo Carrasco made the second of two PATs. Dean’s 13-yard run extended Carlynton’s advantage to 26-16 before Walsh scored on a two-yard run to cut the deficit to 26-22 in the fourth quarter.

Lewis returned the ensuing kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown for a 32-22 lead.

Chartiers-Houston converted on a second safety, but the deficit was too large to overcome.

Latrobe 35, Ringgold 6: John Wetzel threw four touchdown passes and Latrobe rolled to a victory over Ringgold in Class 4A Big Seven Conference play.

Ja’Tawn Williams was on the receiving end of three of Wetzel’s strikes, as he pulled in receptions from 47, 17 and 20 yards. Jack Drenjevich caught a 3-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter, as the Wildcats (3-1, 5-2) built up a 21-0 lead.

Wetzel scored on a 3-yard run in the second quarter and Ben Bigi made all five of his extra-point opportunities to push Latrobe’s advantage to 35-0 at halftime.

Daryl Tolliver’s 27-yard run helped the Rams (0-3, 0-7) avoid the shutout.
