Sophomore Amelia Brose scored two goals and Chartiers-Houston defeated visiting Bentworth 3-1 in Class A Section 2.

The loss eliminated Bentworth (4-6-1, 7-7-1) from playoff contention. Chartiers-Houston is in second place in the section at 9-3 and 13-3 overall.

Brose scored both of her goals in the first half, one off a deflection. Bentworth closed to within 2-1 with 19:59 left in the game on a goal by Cassidy Sicchitano, but C-H’s Ava Capozzoli clinched the win with a late tally.

  • Belle Vernon rolled to a 5-0 victory over Uniontown in Class 3A Section 2.

The Leopards (6-6-1, 7-8-1), who have won three straight, received goals from five different players: Kelsey Roskovich, Abby Russell, Grace West, Chessa Mertz and Payton Walsh. West also had two assists.

  • South Fayette was a 6-0 winner over Trinity in a Class 3A Section 4 contest at Hiller Field.

Boys soccer

Peters Township and Upper St. Clair played to a 1-1 tie Tuesday night in Class 4A Section 2.

The lone Peters Township goal was scored by Blake Gabelhart. The Indians are 9-3-1 in section and 10-3-1 overall. USC remains in first place at 11-1-1, 13-1-1.

Women’s soccer

Freshman Kaitlyn Prickett scored two goals and Waynesburg shut out visiting Bethany 3-0 in a Presidents’ Athletic Conference match Wednesday.

Prickett scored her first goal in the 13th minute. The score remained 1-0 until 44 seconds into the second half when freshman Julz Mohrbacher scored her team-leading 11th goal of the year.

Goalkeeper Mya Riggle stopped all six shots that she faced for her first complete game shutout of the season.

Waynesburg is 4-1-2 in the PAC and 6-4-2 overall.

College field hockey

Kenyon scored three times in the second half to break a halftime tie and defeat visiting Washington & Jefferson 4-1 in a North Coast Athletic Conference match Wednesday.

The loss drops the Presidents to 4-4 in the conference and 5-7 overall.

After a scoreless first quarter, W&J tallied the game’s first goal 4:32 before halftime. Senior Hailey Wachowiak scored unassisted. It was Wachowiak’s NCAC-leading 11th goal.

In the NFL

As they wait for Deshaun Watson’s shoulder injury to improve, the Cleveland Browns did some juggling with their healthy quarterbacks.

Watson didn’t practice again Wednesday with a bruised right shoulder, leaving his status in question for Sunday’s game against the unbeaten San Francisco 49ers.

Browns coach Kevin Stefanski again declined to provide many details about the injury that happened on a running play in a Sept. 24 win over Tennessee.

While so much remains unanswered, Stefanski did reveal that veteran quarterback P.J. Walker – currently on the practice squad – has moved ahead of rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson as Watson’s backup.

  • Rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson will miss at least four weeks after the Indianapolis Colts put him on the injured reserve list.

The former Florida star injured the AC joint in his right shoulder when he hit the ground awkwardly at the end of a 4-yard run during Sunday’s win over Tennessee.

Five-year veteran Gardner Minshew will replace Richardson as the starter.

In baseball

The Minnesota Twins added designated hitter Byron Buxton as an injury substitute to their AL Division Series roster prior to Game 4 against Houston on Wednesday, removing first baseman Alex Kirilloff because of worsening shoulder pain.

Major League Baseball rules require Commissioner’s Office approval of mid-series roster changes. Dr. Gary Green, MLB’s medical director, confirmed the injury after communication with a club physician.

Buxton, who has only appeared in more than 92 games in one of his nine major league seasons, has not played since Aug. 1. Persistent knee trouble has limited him to a hitting-only role this season.

Manager Rocco Baldelli declined to speculate about whether Buxton could play the outfield, but he indicated the 2022 All-Star would only be considered for pinch-hitting or pinch-running opportunities.

In college basketball

The Kansas men’s basketball program was put on probation and ordered to take down its 2018 Final Four banner but escaped a postseason ban Wednesday, when an independent panel created by the NCAA to handle complex cases downgraded five Level I violations lodged against the Jayhawks.

The violations stem from a 2017 federal investigation into college basketball corruption, and hinged on whether representatives of the apparel company Adidas were considered boosters when two of them arranged payments to prospective recruits.

Kansas officials never disputed that payments were made, only that they had any knowledge of them.

In the NBA

The Charlotte Hornets have waived former first-round draft pick Kai Jones just three days after the center/forward announced on social media that he had requested to be traded.

Jones was not with the Hornets for training camp, with the team citing “personal reasons” in a statement.

The decision came after Jones displayed some bizarre behavior on social media over the last few months, which including criticism of his teammates.
