Pirates’ Hayes is Gold Glove finalist

Nolan Arenado’s streak of consecutive Gold Gloves has ended at 10.

The St. Louis Cardinals third baseman was not among the three finalists announced Wednesday. Pittsburgh’s Ke’Bryan Hayes, Colorado’s Ryan McMahon and Atlanta’s Austin Riley are contending for the award, which will be announced Nov. 5.

Players who won last year and are among the 2023 finalists are Cleveland second baseman Andrés Giménez and left fielder Steven Kwan, Houston right fielder Kyle Tucker, Philadelphia catcher J.T. Realmuto, Arizona first baseman Christian Walker, Chicago Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson and left fielder Ian Happ, and Los Angeles right fielder Mookie Betts, who played 107 games in right, 70 at second and 16 at shortstop.

Betts, who has won six straight Gold Gloves, also is a finalist at the utility role, a category added last year.

Voting is conducted among managers and up to six coaches from each team, who can’t select players on their own club. Since 2013, voting has been factored with a Society for American Baseball Research defensive index, which comprises about 25% of the total.

The utility category is based on SABR formula and additional defensive statistics.

Boys soccer

Carlynton scored three goals in the second half to erase a deficit and edge Beth-Center 3-2 in a non-section match Wednesday.

Wyatt Pash and Nekoda Bundy scored the goals for the playoff-bound Bulldogs, who finish the regular season with an 11-7 record.

In the NFL

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson has taken the final snap of his rookie season, opting for season-ending surgery on his injured throwing shoulder.

  • The New York Jets are trading seldom-used wide receiver Mecole Hardman back to the Kansas City Chiefs, where he was part of two Super Bowl-winning teams.

The Jets also are sending a seventh-round pick in the 2024 draft to the Chiefs and getting a sixth-rounder in return, according to the person who spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the teams had not announced the trade.

In the NBA

The NBA All-Star Game may soon return to an East vs. West format.

Commissioner Adam Silver said in a televised interview on ESPN that changes are coming to the All-Star Game – and while stopping short of saying any decision has been finalized, he hinted that the current format of top vote-getters serving as captains and drafting their own teams may be shelved.

This season’s All-Star Game is at Indianapolis on Feb. 18.

McGregor won’t face charges

Former UFC champion Conor McGregor will not face sexual assault charges following an investigation of allegations that surfaced during the NBA Finals last June in Miami, his lawyer, police and prosecutors said Wednesday.

The probe examined claims by a woman that McGregor assaulted her in an arena bathroom after Game 4 of the NBA Finals between the Miami Heat and the Denver Nuggets.

“After a thorough investigation, including a review of videos and interviews with eyewitnesses, the authorities have concluded that there is no case to pursue against my client, Conor McGregor,” attorney Barbara Llanes said in an email.

“As anticipated, this decision by the authorities confirms Mr. McGregor’s account of the evening. On behalf of my client, his family and his fans we are pleased this is now over.”
