1966 – Robert Clemente slams a three-run homer for his 2,000th major league hit, leading the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 7-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs at Forbes Field.

1988 – A bad snap on a punt Monessen punt sets up Darrell Harding’s five-yard touchdown run with less than five minutes remaining and Luke Paglia kicks the extra points as Charleroi edges the Greyhounds 7-6 in a season-opening high school football game.

1988 – Melvin Turpin of the Utah Jazz becomes the first NBA player traded to a team in another country when he is sent to Zaragoza of Spain for Jose Ortiz.

1995 – In one of the highest-scoring games in the football series, Washington defeats Trinity, 42-33. Both teams return kickoffs for touchdowns, and Trinity leads 27-14 in the third quarter before Washington scores 21 unanswered points, including a 55-yard TD pass from Ken Carl to Andy Molinaro.

1999 – Quarterback Bryan Milligan rushes for 118 yards and two touchdowns and passes for another score as Washington defeats Trinity 21-6 in a season-opening game at College Field.

2011 – Jason Vankirk throws a 10-yard touchdown pass to Corey Hunsberger in the third quarter to give Trinity the lead, and the Hillers’ defense does the rest in a 19-18 victory over visiting Canon-McMillan in the season opener.

2012 – The Washington Wild Things’ Andrew Heck plays all nine positions in a 6-4 season-ending loss to the Schaumburg Boomers.

2012 – Robert Streb shoots a final round of 7-under par 64 for a four-stroke victory in the Web.com Tour’s Mylan Classic at Southpointe Golf Club.

1967 – California’s Bruce Dal Canton makes his major-league debut, throwing three scoreless innings in relief for the Pirates during a 7-2 loss to Philadelphia.

1970 – Vince Lombardi, the head coach of the Washington Redskins who reached legendary status in the 1960s with the Green Bay Packers, dies of cancer at age 57.

1972 – Twenty-four-year-old Bill Schmidt of Canonsburg wins a bronze medal in the javelin with a throw of 276-11 1/2 at the Munich Olympics.

1973 – Gary Smith, a pitcher from Lone Pine, is named Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive year, and Sol Mintz successfully defends its World Class B men’s slow-pitch softball championship in St. Louis. Sol Mintz defeats Edna Hotel of New Kensington in the title game, 16-10, in eight innings. Chuck Yesenchak of Muse hits two home runs in the final.

1976 – Rick Young throws for one touchdown and scores on a one-yard run in the fourth quarter as Washington High School wins its season opener, 19-14, over host Charleroi.

1988 – Shawn Evans and Jim Fields each score two touchdowns as Washington erases a halftime deficit and snaps a three-game losing streak to Trinity by defeating the Hillers 28-7 in the season opener.

1993 – Ken Konek rushes for 152 yards on 27 carries and scores on a three-yard run with 4:02 remaining to give Charleroi a 7-0 season-opening victory over arch-rival Monessen.

2013 – Pinch-hitter Travis Snider homers in the ninth inning to lift Pittsburgh to a 4-3 win over the Milwaukee Brewers that clinches the Pirates’ first non-losing record in 21 seasons.

Sept. 4

1951 – East Washington High School cancels its football season, citing a lack of players. Principal Thomas R. Shupe made the announcement after a meeting with prospective football players. Only 16 candidates, including five freshmen, attended the meeeting.

1972 – Mark Spitz of the U.S. wins his seventh gold medal at the Munich Olympics when he swims the third leg in the 400-meter medley relay.

1976 – Scott Orndoff scores on runs of one and 25 yards as West Greene defeats visiting Edgewood 22-6 for the Pioneers’ first victory in 34 games.

1981 – Led by George Dudley’s 215 rushing yards, Canon-McMillan scores the game’s final 40 points and defeats visiting Peters Township 40-7 in a season-opening football game.

1987 – Mark Wise completes eight of nine passes with two going for touchdowns as Washington defeats Trinity 31-19 in the football season opener. The Prexies overcome a big game by Trinity’s John Hairston, who rushes for 171 yards on 18 carries, including a 92-yard touchdown late in the first half.

1988 – Quarterback Brian Kaderli connects with Jon Broglie for an 83-yard touchdown pass with 1:33 remaining to give Peters Township a 20-14 win over visiting Mt. Pleasant.

1999 – Washington High School scores two touchdowns in the final seven seconds of the first half and defeats host Trinity 48-14, spoiling the debut of new Hillers coach Ed Dalton.

2011 – Englishman Gary Christian shoots a final round of 4-under-par 67 to finish at 17-under and win the Nationwide Tour’s Mylan Classic at Southpointe Golf Club.

2011 – Wild Things pitcher Justin Hall strikes out 14 over 11 innings as the Wild Things win their season finale, 6-2, in 12 innings at Windy City.

2011 – Tavon Austin returns a kickoff for a touchdown as West Virginia defeats Marshall 34-13 in a game stopped early in the fourth quarter because of lightning. The game was delayed for three hours late in the third quarter because of severe storms, resumed and halted again with 14:36 remaining. After a wait of another hour, the game was called off. It was the first game for WVU head coach Dana Holgorsen.
