2000 Turkeys campaign in high gear
Thanksgiving is just over two weeks away, and the 2000 Turkeys campaign to provide Thanksgiving dinners for food-insecure families in Washington County is in high gear.
2000 Turkeys partners with Food Helpers of the Greater Washington County Food Bank and the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank to make sure that more than 16,000 Washington County residents struggling with food insecurity are able to enjoy a Thanksgiving meal with their families and loved ones.
The grassroots effort, launched 40 years ago, couldn’t happen without the support of the Washington County community – individuals, businesses, corporations and organizations who step up each year to lend a hand to our neighbors in need.
Among those partners are Washington FInancial Bank, which presented 2000 Turkeys with a $15,000 donation on the air at WJPA on Thursday.
On behalf of the Washington County Community Foundation, Washington Financial CEO Michael Chaido – armed with a nostalgic 37-year-old photo of 2000 Turkeys founder and board member Pete Povich, the DJ with a long, silver mane of hair – made the donation pledged to match $5,000 donations made during the Nov. 20 Range Resources annual fund drive on the streets of Washington and Canonsburg, in recognition of the bank’s 125th anniversary (its quasquicentennial).
The bank was founded in 1899, during the administration of President William McKinley.
“Our employees and our board are excited to support (2000 Turkeys). It’s one of our favorite charities to support every year, and we’re happy to do it,” said Chaido.
Also visiting the radio station were representatives of The Train Gang of Washington County and the Washington Lions Club, whose nonprofit organizations each donated $500 to 2000 Turkeys.
“Without your support and the support of other corporations and organizations, we wouldn’t be able to feed the 16,000-some people who are food insecure,” said 2000 Turkeys board member Dave Rhome.
Range Resources public relations specialist Kylie Fuller said about 70 students from local school districts and Washington & Jefferson College will be on the streets of Washington and Canonsburg from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Nov. 20 as part of the annual fundraiser to benefit 2000 Turkeys.
We can’t thank you enough for the hundreds and hundreds of donations that have been pouring in this month, and we’re grateful for your efforts to bring joy to others during the holiday season.
