UPMC Washington has expanded its pediatric emergency care services through a partnership with UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
The collaboration aims to ensure that children in Washington County and surrounding areas have access to specialty, child-centered care when they are in the emergency department.
“Our affiliation with UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh empowers our team to deliver the right care, in the right place, at the right time for every pediatric emergency patient,” said Brook Ward, president of UPMC Washington. “Our emergency department is staffed by clinicians specially trained in pediatric care and equipped with the necessary resources, ensuring children of all ages receive the high-quality, timely treatment they need.”
The partnership provides families increased access to specialized care, allowing them to remain in the area for treatment, alleviating barriers to care such as travel.
UPMC Children’s Specialty Care Center Washington, located next to the emergency room entrance at UPMC Washington, provides access to a wide range of pediatric subspecialists. This summer, the center will expand its offerings to include rheumatology. Current services include orthopedics, neurology, cardiology, Down syndrome care, endocrinology, gastroenterology, nephrology, urology and Children’s Express Care.
The collaboration with UPMC Children’s began in 2014, with the opening of UPMC’s Children’s Express Care at UPMC Washington, and later, the opening of UPMC Children’s Specialty Care Center Washington in 2020.
“UPMC Children’s is proud to grow in this community – delivering trusted care for kids, right where families live,” said Diane Hupp, president, UPMC Children’s Hospital. “The need for pediatric services has increased in Washington County, reflecting both a direct response to community needs and UPMC’s ongoing commitment to expanding essential specialty care services locally.”
Children’s Express Care at UPMC Washington offers after-hours and weekend care for minor injuries and illnesses. Staffed by UPMC Children’s physicians, the center operates from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday, and from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
With the new affiliation, pediatric patients will be able to connect with more than 400 physicians across 33 subspecialties at UPMC Children’s for follow-up appointments. The appointments can be scheduled before the patient and parent leave UPMC Washington’s emergency department. The streamlined process, which acts as a concierge service, provides specialized care coordination.
The UPMC Washington emergency department is trained and equipped to treat acute and chronic problems, including acute illnesses, exacerbations of chronic problems and all types of injuries. An attending-level emergency physician is on duty for direct patient care and supervision of all patients seen in the emergency department 24 hours a day, seven days a week. UPMC Washington providers can now consult with board-certified pediatric emergency medicine physicians at UPMC Children’s via emergency department-to-emergency department phone consultations 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
