A Washington County man was arrested after allegedly recording a woman by hiding a phone in the air vent of a UPMC-Greene hospital restroom.

Police said Daniel Rose, 46, of Vestaburg, told them he placed the phone in the fifth-floor bathroom “because he thought his coworkers were speaking ill of him,” according to the criminal complaint.

On the night of May 23, charging documents said, an employee spotted the phone in the air vent, after which she screamed and called other employees to the bathroom.

By the time they got there, the phone was gone, the complaint said. One employee told an officer she had seen Rose take the phone from the vent.

Police said they found the phone on the ground outside Rose’s vehicle after he agreed to a vehicle search. Rose, who had first told police he had placed the phone from the vent on his supervisor’s desk, said it must have fallen out of his pocket, the complaint said. Court paperwork said hospital surveillance footage showed Rose placing the phone outside his car.

After Rose provided a pass code, police said, they found an 80-minute video starting with Rose placing the phone in the air vent, and later showing the female employee in the bathroom.

Police later obtained a search warrant for the entire contents of the phone, which included footage of the female employee using the bathroom, the complaint said.

UPMC-Greene had not responded to a request for comment as of press time Wednesday.

Rose faces felony charges of use of intercepted communications and criminal use of a communications facility, as well as invasion of privacy, tampering with physical evidence and disorderly conduct.

Rose was unable to post $15,000 bail and was lodged in the Greene County jail. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 20.
