Man charged with attempted homicide after Redstone Twp. stabbings

A New Salem man faces charges of attempted homicide after allegedly stabbing his estranged wife, their 11-year-old daughter and his wife’s parents Sunday afternoon.
Richard Hall, 33, broke into the home on Park Street in Redstone Township around 12:30 p.m., by punching out the rear glass door, police said.
Inside, Hall went into the master bedroom where his estranged wife Amanda Diehl and the 11-year-old were hiding, police said. He hit Diehl in the face and then stabbed her multiple times in the chest, neck and arms, according to court paperwork.
“As the defendant was on top of (Diehl) on the floor, the (11-year-old girl) jumped onto her in an attempt to protect her from the defendant,” police wrote in the affidavit of probable cause.
Hall then stabbed the girl in the upper arm, police alleged.
Hall’s 8-year-old son, who had been in the house at the time of the alleged attack, told investigators he ran to get help after Hall stabbed Diehl and his sister.
Diehl’s parents, H. Diehl and Andrea Diehl, intervened during the alleged attack giving Amanda Diehl time to escape to another bedroom, where her daughter applied pressure to her wounds to stop the bleeding, the complaint said.
Police alleged Hall also stabbed Amanda Diehl’s father, then kicked him in the head repeatedly after he fell while telling him he would kill him.
According to the complaint, the attack ended after Hall’s mother showed up and told him to stop.
Court paperwork indicated that Andrea Diehl suffered a laceration on her arm; her husband slowed the bleeding by using a belt, police said.
The Diehls and the 11-year-old were all taken to area hospitals, and all are in stable condition, according to police.
Hall was also taken to the hospital where he was treated for a self-inflicted laceration to his arm, charging documents stated.
Troopers found Hall in the center bedroom, where they took him into custody without incident, according to the affidavit of probable cause.
Hall is charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault, endangering welfare of children, criminal trespass, reckless endangerment, harassment and criminal mischief. He has yet to be arraigned in the case.
