Rasmussen’s gem helps Rays finish off sweep of Yankees
Drew Rasmussen allowed one hit in six scoreless innings, and the Tampa Bay Rays completed their first three-game sweep of the Yankees since 2021, holding on to beat New York 5-4 Sunday. Returning after missing time for the birth of his daughter, Rasmussen struck out seven without a walk as the Rays moved above .500 for the first time this season at 8-7 and extended the Yankees’ losing streak to five games. Aaron Judge hit his fourth homer of the season, a 415-foot, two-run shot with no outs in the ninth against Mason Englert that got New York within one. Englert closed it out from there for his first save.
Twins 8, Blue Jays 2: Tristan Gray hit a three-run home run, Kody Clemens added a solo blast and the Minnesota Twins beat the Toronto Blue Jays. Taj Bradley allowed one run and five hits in five innings to win his third straight start. Gray homered in the second and Clemens connected in a five-run third.
Mariners 6, Astros 1: Logan Gilbert threw seven innings of one-run ball, and the Seattle Mariners beat Houston to extend the Astros’ losing streak to seven. Luke Raley had three hits and two RBIs for the Mariners. Houston pitchers walked nine, including two that forced in runs, increasing their series total to 26.
National League
Diamondbacks 4, Phillies 3: Jose Fernandez and Adrian Del Castillo hit RBI singles in the eighth inning as the Arizona Diamondbacks rallied to beat Philadelphia and send the Phillies to their fourth loss in five games. James McCann doubled and had two hits, and Taylor Clarke (1-0) pitched a scoreless seventh for the win. Paul Sewald pitched a scoreless ninth for his fifth save. Trea Turner homered for Philadelphia, which fell to 7-8 overall. José Alvarado took the loss.
Nationals 8, Brewers 6: Keibert Ruiz singled home two runs to break an eighth-inning tie and the Washington Nationals defeated Milwaukee to complete their first series sweep of the Brewers in 15 years. The Nationals recovered after allowing a tying, three-run homer to Gary Sánchez in the seventh. Brice Turang hit two solo shots and Jake Bauers also went deep for Milwaukee. James Wood homered for Washington.
Padres 7, Rockies 2: Ty France went 3 for 3 with a home run and scored three times as the surging San Diego Padres finished a four-game sweep of the Colorado Rockies. Ramón Laureano hit a two-run homer and Jackson Merrill also went deep for the Padres, but starting pitcher Nick Pivetta exited with right elbow stiffness in the fourth inning. Brett Sullivan had a two-run double for the Rockies. Emergency opener Jimmy Herget started for the Rockies when Kyle Freeland was a late scratch with left shoulder soreness.
Interleague
Orioles 6, Giants 2: Samuel Basallo hit a two-run homer, Pete Alonso also drove in two runs and the Baltimore Orioles defeated the San Francisco Giants. Baltimore has won five of six games and moved above .500 for the first time since its opening day victory. Casey Schmitt homered off the foul pole in left in the ninth inning as part of a three-hit day for the Giants, who dropped two of three to the Orioles. Baltimore starter Cade Povich retired the first 12 batters and allowed one run in 6 2/3 innings. San Francisco starter Adrian Houser gave up four runs and struck out three in 4 2/3 innings.
Red Sox 9, Cardinals 3: Willson Contreras homered against his former team and matched a career high with four hits, leading the Boston Red Sox past the St. Louis Cardinals. Trevor Story also had four hits for the Red Sox. Contreras launched a two-run shot in the second inning and finished with three RBIs. He was acquired by Boston from St. Louis in a December trade. Brayan Bello allowed two runs over 6 2/3 innings to earn the win in his 100th career start. Jordan Walker hit his major league-leading seventh home run for St. Louis.
Tigers 8, Marlins 2: Tarik Skubal outpitched Sandy Alcántara in a matchup of Cy Young Award winners, Dillon Dingler, Kevin McGonigle and Kerry Carpenter homered and the Detroit Tigers earned a three-game sweep with a win over the Miami Marlins. Skubal retired the first nine batters he faced and the two-time reigning AL Cy Young winner had a no-hit bid broken up by Austin Slater’s bloop single with two outs in the sixth. Skubal allowed a run and a season-low two hits with seven strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings. Alcántara allowed seven runs and 10 hits.
Athletics 1, Mets 0: Nick Kurtz hit his first home run this season, sending the Athletics to a 1-0 victory and a three-game sweep of the slumping New York Mets. Aaron Civale allowed four hits in 5 2/3 innings as the Athletics won their fifth straight. Kurtz, who had 36 homers last season and was the AL Rookie of the Year, launched a 363-foot shot to right field off Freddy Peralta in the third inning.
Angels 9, Reds 6: José Soriano struck out 10 over seven shutout innings to become the major leagues’ first four-game winner, and the Los Angeles Angels beat the Reds. Soriano allowed two hits and three walks, throwing 106 pitches and lowering his big league-best ERA to 0.33. Nolan Schanuel had three RBI.
Rangers 5, Dodgers 2: Shohei Ohtani connected off Jacob deGrom for his second straight leadoff home run, but the Texas Rangers rallied to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-2 and avoid a three-game sweep. Evan Carter hit a tying home run off Roki Sasaki and Brandon Nimmo drove in two runs for the Rangers. Ohtani extended his on-base streak to 46 games.
