PT hires Zewe
Peters Township hired Rob Zewe as its new boys basketball coach Monday night.
Zewe was an assistant under previous coach Joe Urmann, who resigned at the end of the season.
Though he is only 33 years old, Zewe has had several jobs as an assistant coach in college. He coached at IUP, Cal State Fullerton and Denver.
College baseball
Collin Patterson hit a bases-clearing three-run triple in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving California a 4-3 victory over Fairmont State in a nonconference game Tuesday at EQT Park.
The game was scoreless until the top of the eighth, when Fairmont State (16-24) scored three times. Cal answered with a run in bottom half on an RBI double by Conor Carney.
In the ninth, Ikon Jones led off with a single and the next two Vulcans were hit by pitches, loading the bases for Patterson, who launched a drive into left centerfield.
Jacon Stallsmith tossed six shutout innings for Cal (24-15) but did not get a decision.Loagn Bauer was the winner with 1.1 innings of relief.
Girls lacrosse
Freshman Emme Shanafelt scored four goals and three other Peters Township players netted hat tricks as the Indians routed Hempfield 19-3 on Monday night in Class 3A Section 1.
Seniors Dana Anderson and Avery Hobbs, along with junior Sia Spanos, each scored three goals.
Men’s golf
Washington & Jefferson finished in second place Monday at the McBride-Behringer-Allen ‘MBA’ Invitational, hosted by Grove City.
The Presidents shot a team total of 307.
W&J freshman Sean Clark finished in a first-place tie with two Grove City golfers. All three shot a 75 on the day to finish 3-over par.
Grier to Panthers
Former West Virginia football quarterback Will Grier signed with another NFL roster on Tuesday. The Carolina Panthers announced they have agreed to terms with Grier to a contract, reuniting with the team that drafted him in 2019. The Panthers used the 100th overall pick in the third round on Grier.
Grier was a third-string quarterback after being drafted by the Panthers, sitting behind Cam Newton and Kyle Allen. He made his first start in Week 16, and then he played again in Week 17. Both games, North Carolina lost. In 2021, Grier was released by the Panthers.
Since being released by the Panthers, Grier was picked up by the Dallas Cowboys, the Cincinnati Bengals, the New England Patriots, the Los Angeles Chargers, the Philadelphia Eagles and most recently, he was on the Cowboys.
Baseball
The Boston Red Sox placed right-hander Sonny Gray on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday with a right hamstring strain and recalled lefty Tyler Samaniego from Triple-A Worcester to replace him on the roster.
Gray lasted just 2 2/3 innings against the Detroit Tigers on Monday, giving up one run on three hits before experiencing discomfort in his right leg. He said after the game he had similar problems in 2022 and ’24.
Gray, 36, is 2-1 with a 4.30 ERA in five starts this season. He is 127-103 with a 3.59 ERA in a 14-year career with six teams.
