San Francisco 49ers star tight end George Kittle was taken off the physically unable to perform list, providing hope that he might be able to return from a ruptured right Achilles tendon before the season opener. The 49ers got good news on the injury front 10 days before the team was set to depart for Australia for a Week 1 game against the Los Angeles Rams on Sept. 11 with both Kittle and All-Pro running back Christian McCaffrey both back at practice. The Niners are scheduled to leave for Australia on Sept. 2.
Auto racing
Lando Norris passed Kimi Antonelli and Lewis Hamilton in the space of a single lap before holding on to win the Dutch Grand Prix for back-to-back Formula 1 wins. Norris started on pole but was overtaken by Antonelli at a restart after the race was stopped for a heavy crash by home hero Max Verstappen, who was unhurt. McLaren’s Norris reeled in Antonelli before passing him around the outside of the first corner in a daring move on lap 54 of 72, then took the lead from Hamilton before the lap was over. Antonelli was second and George Russell third.
College football
Ahmad Hardy will miss Missouri’s season-opening game as The Associated Press All-America running back recovers from being shot in the leg three months ago. The 25th-ranked Tigers start the season at home on Sept. 3 against Arkansas-Pine Bluff without Hardy on the field. Coach Eli Drinkwitz had said in July that it could take Hardy five to eight weeks to be cleared to play, but Drinkwitz said Saturday there is no timetable on Hardy’s comeback. Hardy was shot in his home state while attending a concert in Mississippi on May 10.
College Basketball
Mark Mitchell is transferring to Kentucky for a disputed fifth season of basketball after starting 133 games at Missouri and Duke over the last four years. The move was confirmed Sunday by his agent, Brandon Mitchell. Brandon Mitchell says Mark Mitchell informed the Wildcats’ program of his decision on Saturday. After scoring 18.3 points for the Tigers last season, he signed a contract with the Denver Nuggets that was not guaranteed. Mitchell along with scores of college athletes who graduated high school in 2022 appear to be on a path to play a fifth season after filing state-court lawsuits.

Manchester City marked Eno Maresca’s first Premier League game in charge with a late rally by scoring twice in the final 10 minutes to grab a 2-1 victory at home to Bournemouth. Maresca called it “the perfect day.” Josko Gvardiol finished into the bottom corner in the first minute of stoppage time for the winner, which was initially given offside before being awarded following a video review. Marc Guehi equalized in the 84th. Dominik Szoboszlai converted a penalty in the ninth minute of stoppage time to salvage a 2-2 draw for Liverpool at Newcastle. Brighton thrashed Aston Villa 4-0.
Golf
Scott Jamieson has won the Nexo Championship by two shots at one of President Donald Trump’s golf courses in Scotland to secure a first European tour title in 14 years. The 42-year-old Scot shot 5-under 67 and finished on 11-under par overall at Trump International Golf Links in Aberdeenshire. It was his second title on the tour, after winning the Nelson Mandela Championship in South Africa in 2012. England’s Matthew Jordan was runner-up Sunday after shooting 70.
