The Matt Sieg era moved out of Fort Cherry last season. Fortunately, the Colin Sieg era has begun.
With Matt Sieg, the Rangers enjoyed some of their best days of high school football. And that’s exactly what Colin hopes to provide before he graduates. If Friday night’s game was any indication, then a lot more victories await the Rangers.
Colin Sieg rushed for 41 yards, passed for 165 and scored three touchdowns as Fort Cherry defeated Chartiers-Houston, 49-7, at Jim Garry Stadium.
“Different type of player but similar in some ways,” Fort Cherry head coach Tanner Garry said of the 6-2, 190-pound freshman. “He throws the ball really well. I’m proud of him.”
The Rangers roared out of the gate, taking a 14-0 lead after one quarter and 28-7 at halftime.
Colin Sieg scored three times, twice on passes and once on a short run. Eli Salvini scored on runs of 60 and 65 yards. Landon Trnavsky caught a 60-yard pass from Sieg for another score.
Chartiers-Houston broke the shutout when Brody McCrerey caught a 75-yard pass from Teegen Bogden.
Ryan Huey finished off the scoring with an 8-yard run for the Rangers.
Washington 21, Steel Valley 6
Washington snapped a four-game losing streak against the Ironmen and won at Steel Valley for the first time in its history with a 21-6 victory.
New Prexies quarterback Travon Moye accounted for three touchdowns, two rushing, and was 7 of 10 passing for 100 yards.
Moye connected on a 60-yard pass with Ameer Nelson for the game’s first touchdown in the first quarter.
Then, Moye scored on a 1-yard run to give the Prexies a 14-0 lead heading into halftime.
Jayvon Roberts scored on an 8-yard run for Steel Valley in the third quarter to make it a one-score game, but Moye put the game away with a 2-yard score in the fourth.
Nelson caught four passes for 77 yards.
South Fayette 34, West Mifflin 21
A big second quarter helped South Fayette pull away for a 34-21 victory over West Mifflin.
The Lions scored three touchdowns in the frame, including two from Aayden Wright.
Wright caught a 27-yard touchdown pass from Braedon Plasko, which tied the game at 14-14 and had a 4-yard run for another touchdown with 35 seconds remaining until halftime, which gave the Lions a two-score cushion.
Sandwiched in between the two Wright scores was a 2-yard interception return by Jacob Bostian.
Plasko closed the scoring with a 53-yard touchdown in the third quarter. He also threw a 11-yard touchdown pass to Alex Deans in the first.
Plasko completed 14 of 18 passes for 165 yards.
California 40, Mohawk 6
Brandon Meier passed for 266 yards and four touchdowns, and rushed for two more scores to lead California to a 40-6 win over Mohawk.
Meier connected with Chase Shemansky for two touchdowns apiece.
Shemansky caught touchdown passes of 16 and 10 yards. Weston Monticelli hauled in a 18-yard touchdown and Meier hit Alan Dennis for a 68-yard score.
Meier also had touchdown runs of 50 and 2 yards.
Dennis caught three passes for 106 yards and Monticelli had four receptions for 108 yards.
Kam O’Lare found Cam Quear for a 20 yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to break the shutout for Mohawk.
Monessen 34, Charleroi 16
Behind a big night from Kayden Kolbeck and Kaier Payne, Monessen cruised to a 34-16 win over Charleroi.
Kolbeck rushed for two touchdowns, one from 31 yards in the first quarter and another from 64 yards in the fourth quarter.
He also caught a touchdown from Kaier Payne.
Payne threw for 269 yards and had a pair of touchdown passes .
Jesse McMasters scored on a 20-yard fumble return for the Cougars and Jaxson Klinger connected on a 15 yard touchdown with Braedon Lunger.
Burgettstown 42, Jefferson-Morgan 6
Brody Rightweiser and Blake Neal combined for five touchdowns and Michael Carrozza returned a kickoff 80 yards for a score as Burgettstown opened the season with a 42-6 win over Jefferson-Morgan at Hill Memorial Stadium.
Rightweiser rushed for 116 yards and three touchdowns, while Neal connected on 13 of 18 passes for 192 yards and touchdowns to Caleb Matalik and Dominick Stevenson.
The Blue Devils scored 14 points in each of the first three quarters and held J-M to 177 total yards.
The Rockets scored on a 35-yard pass from Triton Farabee to Ej Lingenfield in the second quarter.
Thomas Jefferson 34, Belle Vernon 6
Josh Palmer threw three first-half touchdown passes and Cam Ebner ran for a pair in the second half as Thomas Jefferson defeated Belle Vernon 34-6.
Thomas Jefferson led 21-0 at halftime and was never threatened by the Leopards.
Palmer threw scoring passes of 40 and four yards to Kane Eggerton and a 46-yard TD to Elijah Fant to put the Jaguars up 21-0. Palmer finished with 159 passing yards.
Ebner, who rushed for 140 yards, had scoring jaunts of 49 and 12 yards in the third quarter that ended with TJ leading 34-6.
Belle Vernon’s lone touchdown came on a 30-yard pass from Jace Gedekoh to Cam Jenko.
Avella 48, Mapletown 0
Chas Rush passed for a touchdown, ran for another and caught a scoring pass as Avella opened its season by routing Mapletown 48-0.
Rush opened the scoring only 18 seconds into the game when he caught a 67-yard pass from Johnny Urbana. Rush added a six-yard TD run later in the first quarter.
Darren Rushel’s eight-yard scoring jaunt put Avella up 20-0 in the second quarter and Gage Samol scored the first of his two touchdowns on a 30-yard run. Samol, who ran for 165 yards on only six carries, added a 52-yard TD burst in the third quarter.
Rush threw a 68-yard TD pass to Caleb Amaismeier in the second quarter and Gavin Gatewood closed the scoring with an 11-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Avella rushed for 313 yards. The Eagles’ defense held Mapletown to 62 net yards, including 44 on the ground. Avella threw only two passes in the game and both went for touchdowns.
McGuffey 35, Bentworth 7
McGuffey dominated the second half and pulled away for a 35-7 victory over Bentworth.
The win snapped a 20-game losing streak for McGuffey, which played the last two years in Class 3A. The Highlanders are back down to Class 2A this season.
It also was the first victory for Highlanders head coach Nate Parry.
The score was tied 7-7 at halftime, with McGuffey’s first-half score coming on a 75-yard kickoff return by Dristen McAnallen that tied the score.
The Highlanders took the lead for good on an eight-yard TD run by Dante Gadani in the third quarter. A 12-yard scoring run by Dennis Furmanek pushed McGuffey’s lead to 21-7 in the third quarter.
Gadani added a two-yard plunge in the fourth quarter and Kash Main capped the scoring with a six-yard TD run.
Caleb Simons led the McGuffey ground game with 145 yards on 15 carries. Furmanek added 64 yards on nine attempts.
Carmichaels 20, Leechburg 13
Stephen Lewis scored on a 28-yard run in the fourth quarter that secured a 20-13 win for Carmichaels at Leechburg.
The Mikes gave new head coach Ken Perkins his first victory.
Carmichaels led 8-7 at halftime and 14-13 after three quarters.
The Mikes kept Leechburg out of the end zone in the decisive fourth quarter.
Leechburg opened the scoring in the second quarter on a three-yard run by Jaxson Vargo, but Carmichaels with a K.C. Shook broke off an 80-yard touchdown run and Ryder Krieg caught a two-point conversion pass from Peyton Morecraft.
Vargo threw a 10-yard TD pass to Louie Vargo that put Leechburg back in front 13-8 in the third quarter, but Carmichaels won with the game’s final two scores. A 10-yard TD run by Shook put the Mikes back in front, 14-13.
Shook had a big game, rushing for 208 yards on 20 carries and Job Smith added 111 yards on six attempts.
In other games: Beth-Center defeated Brentwood, 34-6. No other game details were reported.
