‘Puppy Love’ dance benefits sheriff’s k-9 unit
The Washington County Sheriff Department is hosting a Puppy Love Dinner Dance to support the department’s K-9 unit on Saturday, Feb. 14, at Julian’s Banquet Hall in Washington.
Doors open at 5 p.m., and dinner will be served at 6. A DJ will provide musical entertainment for the dance.
The fundraiser will feature 50/50 and raffle baskets, and proceeds will benefit the deputy K-9s, Myya, Sammi, Creed. and Obie. Myya, the newest member, is training to become a facility K-9 to provide comfort for people at the Washington County Courthouse and others facing traumatic situations. Sammi is trained in bomb and patrol, and Creed specializes in narcotics and patrol. Obie is retired.
At least two K-9s will attend the dinner dance.
“We’re so fortunate to have this K-9 team, and we can assist other agencies and municipalities and they’re utilized outside of the area, too,” said Deputy Kristie Salzman, whose K-9 partner is Sammi. “They just want to help, and they’re so happy when they’re working. They just want to make us happy.”
Salzman thanked the community for helping make it possible for the sheriff’s department to form a K-9 division that has had four K-9s over the past decade.
“We couldn’t do this without the support of the community,” she said.
Tickets are $30, and a cash bar is available.
The event provides the community with an opportunity to “support the paws that enforce the laws.”
The sheriff department is seeking donations of baskets, gift cards and monetary donations to help cover the costs of the event.
For tickets, visit the sheriff’s office at 100 W. Beau St., Suite 303, Washington, or the Family Court Center, 29 W. Cherry Ave., Washington.
