NAACP, historical society, and LeMoyne center to host Black History Month event
The NAACP Washington Branch, with the Washington County Historical Society and the LeMoyne Community Center, will host a Black History Month celebration event on Saturday, Feb. 21, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
The second annual Arcs of Freedom Symposium will feature presentation of topics related to abolition, Freedom Seekers, and the Underground Railroad.
The event will be held at the Washington County Historical Society Research and Education Center, 48 E. Maiden St., Washington. Limited parking is available.
Featured speakers include Alonna Carter-Donaldson, Associate Curator of the Museum of African American History at the Heinz History Center, whose topic is “Taking My Freedom: Black Women, the Law, and Exercising Autonomy in Early Western Pennsylvania,” and Dr. Julia Bernier, Associate Professor of History at Washington & Jeferson College and author of “Freedom’s Currency,” whose topic is “Ransomed! American Abolition and Buying Freedom.”
After the lectures conclude, attendees can tour the LeMoyne House and the Arcs of Freedom Exhibit.
