Wild Things win opener, lose Liquori
Andrew Czech hit a two-out, two-run double that capped a four-run top of the ninth inning as the Wild Things rallied for a 7-5 win over the Schaumburg Boomers in a series opener Tuesday night at Wintrust Field.
Washington’s comeback snapped Schaumburg’s six-game winning streak. It also moved the Wild Things (11-5) into a first-place tie with Evansville in the Frontier League’s Central Division.
Washington trailed 3-2 entering the eighth inning but tied the score when Caleb Ketchup scored on a sacrifice fly by Czech.
Schaumburg, however, regained the lead by scoring twice in the bottom of the eighth, the last run coming on an RBI triple by Alex Calarco. Washington right fielder Jeff Liquori was injured on the play and had to be carried off the field. Liquori was placed on the 14-day injured list with a knee injury.
In the top of the ninth, Schaumburg reliever Tanner Shears (0-1) walked newly signed Antonio Monroy to start the frame. Kyle Edwards followed with a single and both runners moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Three Hillier. Connor Peek followed with a walk that loaded the bases with one out.
Caleb Riedel replaced Shears and struck out the first batter he faced.
Ryan Ford, who was Liquori’s replacement, hit a line drive up the middle that scored both Monroy and Edwards to tie the game at 5-5. Czech followed with his two-run double to the wall in left centerfield.
Washington closer Tyler Davis pitched the bottom of the ninth for his second save.
Michael Foltz Jr. (2-0) was the winning pitcher in relief. Washington starter Zach Kirby allowed five hits and three runs over six innings.
NFL
Travis Kelce is a three-time Super Bowl champion, four-time All-Pro and fiance of music superstar Taylor Swift.
On Wednesday he added minority investor in the Cleveland Guardians to his resumé.
The Guardians announced before their game against the Washington Nationals that the Kansas City Chiefs tight end has purchased a minority share in the franchise.
The Cleveland Heights native bought a small share of David Blitzer’s 35% stake. Blitzer can become the controlling owner after the 2027 season or he can wait to exercise that option later.
Baseball
Held without a hit through seven innings, the Milwaukee Brewers broke through in the eighth with three hits and two runs to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 2-1 on Wednesday.
Dustin May carried a no-hitter into the eighth for the Cardinals, who have lost seven of nine games. May was looking to become just the third pitcher in the history of American Family Field, which opened in 2001, to pitch a no-hitter.
Garrett Mitchell led off the eighth with a double and Luis Rengifo followed with a single, chasing May (3-6).
* Mike Soroka limited San Francisco to two runs on four hits in six innings, Geraldo Perdomo broke a seventh-inning tie with a sacrifice fly and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the Giants 3-2 for a three-game sweep.
* Left-hander Cristopher Sánchez pitched seven brilliant innings, extending his scoreless streak to 44 2/3 innings and passing Hall of Famer Grover Cleveland Alexander for the Phillies franchise record, in a 3-0 win against the San Diego Padres for a three-game sweep.
College basketball
Miami (Ohio) basketball coach Travis Steele signed a contract extension that runs through the 2033-34 season.
Steele helped the RedHawks become the fifth Division I program to go undefeated during the regular season. Miami finished 32-2 last season, which included. a win over SMU in the First Four of the NCAA Tournament.
