Bentworth boys reach 4th straight WPIAL final
High school
The Bentworth boys soccer team’s four-peat attempt is alive and well.
A goal six minutes into the second half by Adam Moessner secured a 1-0 victory for the top-seeded Bearcats (18-1) over No. 5 Springdale (13-6-2) in the WPIAL Class A semifinals Monday at Peters Township Middle School.
The Bearcats will attempt to win a fourth consecutive title when they play No. 3 Our Lady of the Sacred Heart in the Class A championship at 5:45 p.m. Saturday at F.N.B. Stadium in Pittsburgh’s Station Square.
It’s the third straight time the two teams will meet in the finals. Bentworth won 3-1 last year and won on penalty kicks, 5-4, in 2024 after the two teams were scoreless through regulation and two overtimes.
The two teams also met in the state semifinals last year, which Bentworth won on its way to its first PIAA title.
OLSH defeated Winchester Thurston, 2-1, in the other semifinal.
Moessner had a penalty kick stopped by Springdale goalkeeper Christian Stresky in the second half, but was able to find the back of the net a few minutes later for his third goal of the postseason. He scored twice, the game-winning and tying goals, in Bentworth’s 3-2 overtime win over Freedom in the quarterfinals.
