WVU adds game with Purdue

West Virginia football made an adjustment to its 2027 schedule Tuesday. The Mountaineers announced they’ve added a home game against Purdue to their 2027 schedule, with a date announced in the coming days.

The addition of the Boilermakers comes as a preparation for the new 24-team College Football Playoff format, expected in 2027. The new format requires Power Four teams to play 10 Power Four games, which means one in addition to the nine Big 12 games. WVU was scheduled to play no Power Four opponents in the nonconference, with Ohio, Southern Mississippi and VMI on the schedule.

Which game Purdue will replace has not been announced.

NFL

The Arizona Cardinals placed running back Jeremiyah Love on injured reserve with a high ankle sprain in another setback during his rookie season, the team announced on Tuesday.

The No. 3 overall pick out of Notre Dame was expected to make an immediate impact with the Cardinals, but has battled problems with both ankles since the preseason. He returned from ankle issues to play against the Cowboys on Sunday, but had just 23 rushing yards on nine carries before leaving with a different ankle injury.

Love has run for 268 yards and a touchdown over six games this season, including a season-high 90 yards against the 49ers on Sept. 27. He’ll miss at least the next four games before he’s eligible to return.

• Baltimore Ravens quarterback Joe Fagnano is set to make his first career start Thursday night, with Lamar Jackson and Tyler Huntley injured.

Coach Jesse Minter announced that Fagnano, who has been dealing with an ankle injury himself, would be the choice against the Jacksonville Jaguars. The 25-year-old rookie made his NFL debut in Sunday’s 36-10 loss to Buffalo after Jackson left with a thumb injury and Huntley left with a toe issue.

Fagnano went 10 for 21 for 91 yards with an interception last weekend. He played college football at UConn and Maine. After going undrafted, he made Baltimore’s 53-man roster out of camp.

Hockey

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Tuesday that Russia will not be allowed to play at the upcoming world junior hockey tournament, adding to a growing boycott led by European federations ahead of the men’s tournament next year in Germany.

Sweden, Finland, the Czech Republic, Norway, Latvia and Denmark came out with statements signing up for a boycott of games against Russia as long as the war in Ukraine is ongoing. A top sponsor of the world championships next year threatened to walk away, after Finland announced Monday it was rallying other nations to refuse to play Russia.

Carney said Canada respects those decisions but that the nation had its own call to make. The world juniors, featuring the top men’s players under age 20, is being held in Alberta beginning in late December.

Women’s basketball

Northwestern State sophomore Chloe Donnell made 14 3-pointers to tie the NCAA record in the team’s 120-40 over Ecclesia on Monday night in the season opener.

Donnell, who transferred to the school from South Alabama, finished with 46 points, hitting 14 of her 23 3-point attempts. Donnell tied the mark held by Juicy Landrum of Baylor, who did it in 2019.

Before Monday, Donnell’s career-high in college was just four points.

Golf

Nelly Korda clinched the points-based LPGA player of the year on Tuesday, her second such award in three years and moving her one victory away from qualifying for the LPGA Hall of Fame.

Korda won four times this year, including two majors at The Chevron Championship and the U.S. Women’s Open at Riviera, her signature win during another dominant season.

She won the award when double major winner Haeran Ryu of South Korea had to withdraw last week in Malaysia due to injury, and Miyu Yamashita of Japan and Jeeno Thitikul of Thailand did not enter The Annika next week in Florida.

That left them mathematically unable to catch Korda.

Korda’s season was so stellar she wrapped up the LPGA’s top award with three tournaments remaining on the schedule.

Starting at /week.
