Baseball
Kroenke Sports and Entertainment has reached a deal to purchase controlling ownership of the Los Angeles Angels from Arte Moreno, expanding its sprawling empire of teams across every major U.S. professional sport with the addition of the beleaguered baseball club.
The company led by Stan Kroenke made the surprising announcement Tuesday, saying it expects to close the transaction in early 2027. Major League Baseball, which must approve any sale, didn’t immediately comment on the news.
Kroenke’s company owns the NFL’s Los Angeles Rams, Premier League champion Arsenal, the NBA’s Denver Nuggets, the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche, Major League Soccer’s Colorado Rapids and SoFi Stadium, along with the large Hollywood Park campus around the multibillion-dollar Inglewood arena. The conglomerate has now moved into baseball with the Angels, whose turbulent 23-year tenure under Moreno’s ownership will finally come to an end.
“The Angels are a storied franchise anchored in a great market,” Kroenke said in a statement. “We look forward to an exciting future with the Angels organization.”
At 53-85, the AL-worst Angels are currently headed to their 11th consecutive losing season and their 12th consecutive non-playoff season, both the longest active streaks in the majors.
• The San Diego Padres selected the contract of 20-year-old catcher Ethan Salas from Triple-A El Paso on Tuesday, making him the youngest active player in the major leagues.
If Salas appears behind the plate, he will be the youngest catcher in the big leagues since Ivan Rodriguez, who was 19 when he debuted with the Texas Rangers on June 20, 1991.
Salas, who signed with the Padres in 2023 for a record $5.6 million bonus as a top international prospect, has progressed quickly through their minor league system despite a back injury that caused him to miss most of the 2025 season.
Hockey
The Anaheim Ducks will retire the number of longtime captain Ryan Getzlaf during a ceremony Jan. 30.
Ducks owners Henry and Susan Samueli announced the honor for Getzlaf, who retired in April 2022 after a 17-year NHL career spent entirely in Anaheim.
Getzlaf is the top scorer in Ducks history, racking up 1,019 points in a franchise-record 1,157 games while also becoming the team’s career assists leader and its top playoff scorer. He was the Ducks’ captain for his final 12 seasons, the longest tenure in team history.

New Michigan coach Mike Boynton Jr. announced that McCoy suffered an ACL injury to his right knee.
McCoy was ranked as the No. 14 prospect in the country by 247Sports.
