Boys soccer
Anthony Sawa had the lone goal for Belle Vernon in a 1-1 tie with Thomas Jefferson Sunday. Morgan Bunch made six saves in net for the Leopards.
• Trinity and South Fayette played to a 1-1 draw Saturday at the Canon-McMillan kickoff.
Cooper Cincinnati scored for the Hillers, who played with 10 players for 70 minutes after a player received a red card 10 minutes into the game.
Lucas Patel scored on a penalty in the second half for the Lions.
• Cole Scheponik scored twice to help Ringgold earn a 4-0 win over West Mifflin Saturday.
James Lytle and Jack Kozon added a goal a piece for the Rams, while Izaiah Wilson, Joshua Molisee and Jaxon Witcherman produced one assist. Donovan Fortuna made six saves in net for the Rams.
• Jesse Sobczak netted the game-winning goal in the second half as Belle Vernon topped Laurel Highlands, 2-1, Saturday. Chris Showman assisted on Sobczak’s goal. Jordan Jerome scored in the first half for the Leopards.
Girls soccer
Gabby Beinecke had a hat trick to propel South Fayette past tournament host Avonworth, 5-1, Sunday.
Stella Medvec and Silvi Rossi scored a goal each for the Lions. Rossi had two assists.
• Madison Kanish had 4 goals and an assist as McGuffey beat Washington 9-0 Sunday at the Chartiers-Houston Tournament. Maddie Crowe added two goals and three assists for the Highlanders.
• Grace Littlecott had a hat trick for tournament host Chartiers-Houston in a 4-0 win against Waynesburg Sunday. Whitney Brock also scored for the Bucs, who led 2-0 at halftime.
• Raegan Sobczak scored a goal assisted by Saylor Lee in the second half to help Belle Vernon play to a 1-1 draw with Pine-Richland Sunday.
• Kolbi Rastoka had a hat trick and Ava DiAlessandro added a goal and three assists as Waynesburg defeated McGuffey, 5-1, Saturday at the Chartiers-Houston Tournament.
Rynn Litwinovich scored and Emily Rafferty contributed a pair of assists for the Raiders.
• Savannah Wingard, Whitney Brock and Payten Conner scored a goal each as tournament host Chartiers-Houston recorded a 3-0 win over Washington Saturday. Grace Littlecott assisted on Wingard’s goal.
• Gabby Beinecke scored twice and Abbey Spalla converted a penalty kick in a 3-3 tie for South Fayette against Cathedral Prep Saturday at the Avonworth Tournament.
• Raegan Sobczak led the way with three goals and two assists for Belle Vernon in an 11-1 win against Beth-Center Saturday. Abby Russell had four assists for the Leopards.
Baseball
Aaron Judge was reinstated from the 60-day injured list Monday night by the New York Yankees.
The three-time MVP hasn’t played since May 31 because of a broken rib. New York was off Monday and is scheduled to open a three-game series at home Tuesday night against the Colorado Rockies.
College football
Longtime coach Kyle Whittingham was unaware the stadium clock he watched Saturday night at Michigan might not reflect the official game time. Purdue coach Barry Odom also was caught off guard as he watched on television. The two Big Ten coaches acknowledged Monday they did not know there could be a discrepancy between what everyone was seeing on television and inside the stadium and the conference’s tracking system. But that’s how conference officials explained the dramatic conclusion to No. 16 Michigan’s 13-12 victory in Whittingham’s debut in Ann Arbor. After the refs added 1 second to a clock that appeared to expire on the previous play Bryce Underwood hooked up with J.J. Buchanan for a 47-yard TD pass on the game’s final play.
