Girls soccer
Peters Township remained undefeated in Class 4A Section 2 with a 2-0 victory over visiting Baldwin on Monday night.
It was the first loss of the season for the Highlanders (0-1, 4-1-1).
PT (1-0-1, 3-0-1) had a goal by Taylor McCullough off an assist from London Petit, and Fallan Malley added an unassisted tally. Goalkeeper Kaylin Hoffman kept Baldwin scoreless.
• Maddie Kanish scored four goals and McGuffey was all over Charleroi, defeating the host Cougars 8-0 in Class 2A Section 1 on Monday.
Maddie Crowe and Maddy Lamay, Cora Thomas and Ella Wolfe had the other goals for McGuffey (1-3, 2-4). Highlanders goalkeeper Miranda Weaver did not have to make any saves as McGuffey controlled play for most of the match.
• Canon-McMillan pulled out a 2-1 victory over visiting Upper St. Clair in a Class 4A Section 2 on Monday.
It was the first win for C-M (1-0, 1-1-1). The Big Macs received goals by Elena Moreschi and Ariane Saintonge.
The loss keeps USC (0-1, 0-3-2) winless.
• Belle Vernon and Thomas Jefferson played to a 0-0 draw in Class 3A Section 3 on Monday.
Belle Vernon (1-0-1, 2-1-3) had 18 shots compared to eight for TJ (0-1-1, 1-4-2).
College football
Texas quarterback Arch Manning apologized Tuesday for publicly joking about an AI-altered video that depicted Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian slapping ESPN sideline reporter Holly Rowe in the moments after Texas’ big win over Ohio State.
At the team’s weekly media availability on Monday, Manning was asked if he’d seen any social media posts about the postgame celebration. He mentioned the fake video clip, called it “hilarious” and laughed about it. Several others in the room laughed with him.
A clip of Manning’s remarks posted later on social media quickly drew widespread criticism directed at Manning over joking about violence against women in general and Rowe in particular.
“I made an insensitive comment about an AI video. There is nothing funny about it. It’s easy to say I didn’t mean it, but I know my words and actions were hurtful to a lot of people. I do not take that lightly and am deeply sorry for that,” Manning posted on Instagram.
“I specifically want to apologize to Holly Rowe for what she personally had to deal with because of my comments. I have a ton of respect for her and appreciate her showing me grace in this moment,” Manning said.
Baseball
Houston Astros star Carlos Correa will not return this season as the team chases a playoff berth, manager Joe Espada said Tuesday.
Correa had been working to make a comeback after undergoing left ankle surgery on May 11 that was expected to keep him out six to eight months.
It appeared this weekend that Correa was nearing a return and Espada said Sunday that he would likely play rehabilitation games for Triple-A Sugar Land this week. Instead they decided to give up on Correa playing again this season.
• Shohei Ohtani hit off a tee on Tuesday in Los Angeles and remains on track to return before the end of the regular season, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said.
Ohtani has been on the 15-day injured list since Sept. 8 with right biceps inflammation. The four-time MVP is not traveling with the team, but has been working out and getting treatment.
Roberts hopes Ohtani will play in a few more regular-season games. The Dodgers have already clinched a playoff spot.
