Girls soccer
Brielle Dillon scored in the 78th minute to propel Bentworth to a 2-1 win against Brownsville in Class A Section 2 victory Wednesday.
With the win the Bearcats remained unbeaten at 2-0 in the section and 6-0 overall.
After a scoreless first half, Megan Keturakis scored to give Benworth a 1-0 lead with 21 minutes remaining before Gloria Kovscek knotted the game at 1-1 for the Falcons (1-0, 7-0) by scoring on a free kick.
• Canon-McMillan got goals from five different girls in a 5-0 shutout of Bethel Park (0-2, 3-3) in a Class 4A Section 2 contest. Sarah Coffman, Ella Shields, Rachel Tomley, Sarah Warzinski and Elena Moreschi had a goal apiece for the Big Macs, who improved to 2-0 in section play and 2-1-1 overall.
In other games: Defending state champion South Fayette (2-0-1, 4-1-2) secured a 3-0 shutout of Trinity (0-2, 0-4) in a Class 3A Section 2 game. No other game details were reported.
Boys soccer
Landon Hogue scored the only goal of the match, off an assist by Blake Tennant, giving Waynesburg a 1-0 victory over South Allegheny in a nonsection contest.
Waynesburg’s record is 2-3.
• Beth-Center lost a wild 8-5 shootout to Serra Catholic in a Class 2A Section 1 match Tuesday.
Parker Amost had a hat trick to lead the offense for Beth-Center (1-2-1, 1-4-1). Ryder Roule added two goals.
Pitt to play 9 ACC games
Pitt will play nine Atlantic Coast Conference football games during the 2027 season. The ACC unveiled each of its 17 football programs’ conference opponents Wednesday.
The Panthers’ home conference schedule will include California, Duke, Miami, SMU and Wake Forest. Pitt will travel to face Georgia Tech, Noth Carolina State, Syracuse and Virginia.
Starting in 2027, 16 teams will play a nine-game ACC schedule annually, with one team each season playing eight league games. Clemson is the school that will play only eight conference games in 2027.
Baseball
St. Louis activated rookie second baseman JJ Wetherholt from the 10-day injured list Wednesday before the Cardinals met the San Francisco Giants.
Wetherholt last played on Aug. 29 and was placed on the IL on Aug. 30 with right wrist tendinitis. He missed 15 games.
In 130 games this season, Wetherholt has hit .242 with 14 doubles, 17 home runs and 48 RBI. He has scored 88 runs and stolen 14 bases.
• Luke Keaschall went 3 for 5 and scored from second base on Victor Caratini’s game-ending single in the 13th inning Wednesday, sending the Minnesota Twins past the New York Yankees 5-4.
The Yankees (88-64), who entered the game with a 3 1/2-game deficit behind AL East leader Tampa Bay, pulled star slugger Aaron Judge for a pinch-hitter in the sixth inning with tightness in his lower right leg.
• Petey Halpin hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning, Parker Messick struck out eight and the Cleveland Guardians moved into first place in the AL Central with a 6-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox.
• Myles Straw had two hits and an RBI, Max Scherzer allowed one run in five innings for his second win in four starts and the Toronto Blue Jays beat the Tigers 5-1, ending Detroit’s winning streak at six.
College football
Nebraska and Notre Dame have scheduled a home-and-home series with games in 2032 and 2033 in what will be the first matchups of the tradition-rich programs in more than three decades, the schools announced Wednesday.
Nebraska will host Notre Dame in Lincoln on Oct. 30, 2032, and the Irish will host the Cornhuskers in South Bend on Oct. 29, 2033.
