Golf
Jacob Bridgeman goes into his first Presidents Cup as a two-time PGA Tour winner. Bridgeman rallied from five shots down with a career-best 61 to win the inaugural Biltmore Championship Asheville by two shots. Bridgeman also won the Genesis Invitational at Riviera earlier this year. Ben James also shot a 61 and was runner-up. Neal Shipley, a Mt. Lebanon grad, tied for third. Shipley led after three rounds. Bridgeman’s victory came several hours after J.J. Spaun won the European tour flagship event after being overlooked as a captain’s pick for the U.S. Presidents Cup team. Bridgeman also was a captain’s pick and his victory was a reminder why.
Baseball
Chicago Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman left Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds after being struck in the face by a foul ball while standing near the on-deck circle. Bregman was taken to a hospital for X-rays and CT scans. There was no decision yet on whether he would travel with the team back to Chicago following its 9-1 win. In the fourth inning, Michael Busch checked his swing and fouled off a pitch from Reds right-hander Luis Mey that struck Bregman. He immediately jogged toward the Cubs dugout with his hand over his left eye. Bregman was escorted by training staff into the clubhouse.
