Washington County officials are appealing the decision by the state’s opioid settlement fund review committee to reject eight grant applications put forward by the county for various projects battling the drug epidemic in the region. The Dispute Resolution Committee overseeing the Pennsylvania Opioid Misuse and Addiction Abatement Trust fund will hold a public hearing at 12:15 p.m. March 13 to allow county officials to explain why the eight projects deemed “non-compliant” in December should be given a second look. A request for qualifications is going out for potential engineers for a new trail at the Wisecarver Recreation Area. The Greene County commissioners approved the request in connection with a planned Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant loop trail, part of a series of improvements being made at the park. The county has received several grants for the project, including a $208,100 Department of Conservation and Natural Resources grant in fall 2024. The request will be out for 30 to 60 days, Clerk Jeff Marshall said. Last Thursday, the commissioners had updated the DCNR on its plans for the trail, said Board Chairman Jared Edgreen. State police accused a woman this week of defrauding her mother out of $1,400. Erica Bardell, 42, of McDonald, allegedly convinced her mother that she was being held against her will and needed the money to be released, state police said. Bardell's mother, a 70-year-old resident of Summerhill Township, Cambria County, sent Bardell the money in increments between Feb. 13 and 15. According to state police, Bardell admitted she was not in danger and was "just trying to get money." State police charged her with theft by deception and financial exploitation in Cambria County. The Greene County commissioners approved a slew of tourism-related at their most recent meeting, including money for local events tied to America’s 250th anniversary and repairs to some county facilities. The $265,000 for the county’s Tourism Assets Improvement Project will be used to repair the roofs of the Greene County Fairgrounds arena barn and the Mon View Roller Rink in Greensboro.
