“Alicia’s Law,” which is named for a woman who was abducted when she was a teenager from her Crafton Heights home by an online predator, was approved Wednesday by the Pennsylvania House of Representatives. If the measure is approved by the state Senate and signed by Gov. Josh Shapiro, it would establish a state grant program to help law enforcement track down internet predators who target children. Twelve other states have already put similar laws on their books. Alicia Kozakiewicz, who survived her abduction on New Year’s Day 2002 and is now 38 years old, has been an advocate for strengthening laws that go after child predators who lurk online. The House bill was first ...

The Keystone Exams, which are part of a Pennsylvania high school student’s graduation requirements, could soon be under the microscope following a Monday vote in the state’s House of Representatives asking that a study be done to determine if alternatives could be used instead. The vote was 191-10, indicating broad bipartisan support for the measure in the narrowly divided House. It would require the commonwealth’s education department to look at whether other standardized tests that high school students take, such as the SAT, ACT or Smarter Balanced assessments, could be used in its place. The study would explore whether those tests match statewide academic standards and fulfill ...
The Cecil Board of Supervisors tabled a motion Monday night to authorize township engineer Daniel Deiseroth to conduct a traffic study on the Pennsylvania Route 50 corridor that bisects the rural municipality, opting instead to wait and consider a revised proposal that will include the entire township. Deiseroth explained that the Route 50 study could have been used to inform the placement transportation impact overlay district on the area, which would have imposed a one-time fee on all future developments along the corridor. The revenue generated by the fee would be earmarked for road maintenance and related infrastructure enhancements that would offset the increased wear and tear ...
