Long Branch Community Grange to host kids day

Long Branch Community Grange, at 210 Chestnut St., Coal Center, will host a kids day on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be games, touch-a-truck, activities, contests and learning stations such as sign language, honeybee education, Mr. Yuck, bird feeder making and ice cream making. Some games include water, so wear a bathing suit or bring a towel and a change of clothes. There will be free hot dogs, drinks and other surprises for kids, and adults are welcome to purchase a variety of foods. For questions, call Larry at 724-785-2325.

Former Washington County man killed in helicopter crash

A former Washington County man was killed in a helicopter crash in West Virginia Friday. Leo Basile, 57, of Arthurdale, W.Va., was piloting a helicopter for the Waco Oil & Gas company when it crashed about 7:45 a.m., near Marlinton, W.Va., in Pocahontas County. Basile was the sole occupant of the helicopter and was pronounced dead at the scene. The Sikorsky S-76D helicopter was owned by Waco Oil & Gas. Basile was born in Washington and was a 1987 graduate of Immaculate Conception High School in Washington, according to an obituary published by the Morgan Funeral Home and Crematory in Reedsville, W.Va. Pedestrian killed while crossing Cecil Township road

An 86-year-old man was killed Tuesday morning in Cecil Township while crossing the street to collect his mail. Robert Coen was walking across Cecil Henderson Road near Progress Lane when he was struck by the vehicle traveling southeast shortly after 9:30 a.m., according to Washington County Coroner Timothy Warco. It was not immediately known if the vehicle stopped or if the driver was identified. California Borough to host town hall on filling gap left by KeyBank closure

Cfsbank has invited California residents to attend a town hall event on Tuesday to discuss the future of banking in the borough. The tight-knit Mon Valley community was plunged into uncertainty after KeyBank - the only remaining full-service bank branch in town - announced the planned Aug. 1 closure of the company’s Third Street location earlier this year.
