MVAA awarded grant for scholarship program

Mon Valley Academy for the Arts (MVAA) was awarded a Creative Sector Flex Fund Grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts The $5,000 grant, administered by the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council, will be used to continue and strengthen MVAA’s Empower a Rising Star (EARS) Music Scholarship program. The EARS program provides access to high-quality music instruction for children and young people who might not otherwise be able to afford lessons. Donora man charged for physically abusing children

Donora police charged a man Monday for physically abusing his two children. Akash Maurya, 26, of Donora, faces felony charges of endangering the welfare of children and misdemeanor simple assault charges. According to the criminal complaint, Maurya has been in India since Sunday, and there is an active warrant for his arrest. Sabrina Yinger, Maurya's wife, contacted police Feb. 7 to report the abuse, which occurred at their home in the 900 block of Thompson Avenue.
