Police beat Feb. 18

Donora Assault alleged: Matthew Robert Alt, 27, of Donora, was charged Sunday by Donora police with strangulation, reckless endangerment and simple assault. According to the criminal complaint, at about 7:40 p.m. Saturday, police were called to Alt's home in the 900 block of Thompson Avenue. Hayle Vanmale told police that Alt came home intoxicated and assaulted her. Alt allegedly slammed her to the ground and choked her, court documents state. District Judge Gary Havelka sent Alt to the Washington County jail on $15,000 bond. Multi-church Lenten series to start

Community Lenten gatherings will begin at 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 22, at Fourth Presbyterian Church, 1000 Jefferson Ave., Washington, as part of the annual “Route 844 Corridor” churches’ Lenten services. Each year six or seven churches in the western end of the county gather and offer a worship and fellowship get-together for the community. This year the series will use the book, “Meeting Jesus on the Road,” by Cynthia M. Campbell and Christine Coy Fohr. The churches exchange pastors for the weekly services, with each preaching on one of the book’s Lenten lessons. After worship, each church offers a light dinner/snack for continued fellowship. Crews working to repair water line leak in Waynesburg

Crews were working to restore water service to parts of Waynesburg Tuesday afternoon after a contractor struck a water line. The leak occurred around 3 p.m. Tuesday, the Southwestern PA Water Authority said on its website. A “large part” of the Waynesburg area was affected by the leak, SPWA said. Crews were working to close valves and restore water pressure to customers east of West Waynesburg, Greene County Emergency Management said in a Facebook post Tuesday afternoon. The department did not indicate when repairs would be completed.
