Man accused of wielding knife in attack at East Washington apartment

A man is accused of getting into a domestic dispute with his estranged wife Tuesday morning and later in the day going to an East Washington apartment and assaulting her and another person before briefly holding them at knifepoint. Borough police were called to the domestic dispute about 8 a.m. after Dustin James Cochrane allegedly violated a protection from abuse order filed against him by his wife, according to court documents. Cochrane was gone when police arrived, but he later went to a North Avenue apartment in the borough about 12:40 p.m. with a knife and kicked down the door to get in, police said. He then allegedly pushed his wife down the stairs and beat her, breaking ...

Greene man pleads guilty to abusing infant

A Greene County man accused of beating and sexually assaulting his infant son last year pleaded guilty to all counts against him in Greene County Court of Common Pleas Tuesday. Zachary Bryte, 26, of Washington Township, was arrested and charged with attempted homicide in June after his month-old son was taken to UPMC Greene with seizure-like symptoms. The child was then transferred to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, W.Va, where doctors found a skull fracture, brain bleeding, rib fractures and other injuries that they determined to be consistent with severe trauma. State police said Bryte appeared to have abused the child since his birth. The child was hospitalized in critical ...

Pa. House OKs bill to study alternatives to Keystone Exams

The Keystone Exams, which are part of a Pennsylvania high school student’s graduation requirements, could soon be under the microscope following a Monday vote in the state’s House of Representatives asking that a study be done to determine if alternatives could be used instead. The vote was 191-10, indicating broad bipartisan support for the measure in the narrowly divided House. It would require the commonwealth’s education department to look at whether other standardized tests that high school students take, such as the SAT, ACT or Smarter Balanced assessments, could be used in its place. The study would explore whether those tests match statewide academic standards and fulfill ...

Cecil supervisors table Route 50 traffic study proposal

The Cecil Board of Supervisors tabled a motion Monday night to authorize township engineer Daniel Deiseroth to conduct a traffic study on the Pennsylvania Route 50 corridor that bisects the rural municipality, opting instead to wait and consider a revised proposal that will include the entire township. Deiseroth explained that the Route 50 study could have been used to inform the placement transportation impact overlay district on the area, which would have imposed a one-time fee on all future developments along the corridor. The revenue generated by the fee would be earmarked for road maintenance and related infrastructure enhancements that would offset the increased wear and tear ...

Periodically, a news story comes across my iPad that I just can’t stop thinking about. This story started like this: “On February 21 police officers were dispatched to a bar.” That opening line drew me in almost as fast as “A Florida man ..." “The caller was the bartender,” and ...
