Veterans group to honor Civil War bugler

The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War (SUVCW) will conduct a solemn Memorial Day ceremony honoring John Ross Dunn, bugler of the 22nd Pennsylvania Cavalry, known as “The Ringgolds,” at Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery in Ruff Creek. The ceremony will take place at 10 a.m. Friday, May 29, and is open to the public. It was rescheduled from last week due to inclement weather. Dunn served as a bugler in the first of Pennsylvania’s distinguished Civil War cavalry units. Buglers played a vital role on the battlefield, transmitting orders and signals that guided troop movements during combat. This ceremony seeks to recognize Dunn’s service and sacrifice, as well as to preserve ...

SCI-Fayette inmate found dead in cell

There was no sign of foul play in the death of an SCI-Fayette inmate, the state police said in a news release Tuesday. The body of Lavell Jones, 55, was found alone in his locked cell around 9:27 p.m. May 21, police said. The county coroner’s office released the body to a funeral home. Fayette County Coroner Dr. Bob Baker said Wednesday that typically occurs in cases in which the person is elderly or has known health issues that make an autopsy unnecessary. In a written response, the SCI-Fayette superintendent’s office declined to comment on Jones’ health prior to his death, citing the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act. It referred questions to state police ...

South Strabane supervisors pause Driscoll Park project

Residents near Driscoll Park will have to wait a while longer for relief from flooding, as the South Strabane Township supervisors voted Tuesday to step back from the initial project plan, citing a need to refocus and rescope. The project was initially scoped in 2021 to address flooding and state Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System requirements around Driscoll Park off Locust Avenue. Supervisor Jeff Bull made the motion to inform the Washington County Redevelopment Authority that the township will no longer use the $150,000 it received in Local Share Account (LSA) grant funding in 2021, and to inform KLH Engineers Inc., that their services are no longer required for the ...

Peters school board OKs preliminary budget with tax increase

The Peters Township School District Board of Directors has voted to approve a preliminary $89.7 million budget for the 2026-27 school year. If the budget is given final approval by the board at its June 22 meeting, the millage rate for property owners in the school district will increase by .32 mills, from 16.28 mills to 16.60 mills. This means the owner of a home in the district will have to pay an additional $32 for every $100,000 of assessed property value. The budget will be balanced and the district will maintain a $5 million reserve fund. Brad Rau, the district’s business manager, pointed out that the increase is necessary due to building maintenance projects and ...

Memorial Day, a day set aside to honor fallen veterans, is a red letter day for American labor - literally. On Memorial Day 1937, union blood was spilled in Chicago, when 10 were killed and nearly a hundred protesters were injured during a steelworkers' strike rally. It was a tragic, ...
